SHOW US HOW YOU LIVE - DIET TIPS

Weight Loss Tips, Diets, Workout Ideas

A short two and a half months ago I became a stay at home mom to a beautiful little boy. Prior to that I graduated from Penn State with a degree in nutritional science and worked in the field of cardiovascular nutrition research. When I moved to Indiana I made a career change and started working as a health coach for a large employee wellness program. I predominantly worked with men and women who wanted to make lifestyles changes to achieve many goals such as weight loss, management of cholesterol or blood pressure, or overall improve their health with a balanced diet. During this time I also became a trained wellness coach through Wellcoaches and a licensed Am I Hungry? workshop facilitator. I am thrilled today at the opportunity to share some of my insight with you all.

The Am I Hungry? program is one that gives me such energy. I believe that it is the answer many people have been looking so hard to find for so long and yet it has been right there in front of them their whole lives. For years I have observed people struggling with their weight, trying every fad diet that came around, only to lose the weight but have it sneak back on, plus an extra 5 pounds in the end. I knew that there had to be an explanation why I had seen so many people like this yet I had also seen people who ate what they wanted and never struggle with their weight; what did they know that the other did not. For years I pondered this question to myself and when I found this program it was like a light bulb that had been in my mind for so many years finally illuminated and I had my answer.

So let’s ask ourselves one question, what do we do when diets don’t work? The answer is easy. Stop dieting! Scary thought for most people isn’t it?

Yo-yo dieting is very common. It is where we swing between a restrictive diet and overeating. What Am I Hungry? teaches us is that there is a mid point and we can actually swing like a pendulum rather than a yo-yo. We don’t either have to be on a diet or not on a diet, restricting ourselves and feeling deprived or overeating and feeling guilty but rather that we can eat what we love and love what we eat by regaining our freedom from food and once again becoming an instinctive eater.

The prime example of an instinctive eater is a baby. Each and every one of us was born with the innate wisdom to eat when we were hungry and stop when we were satisfied but through the years and through our experiences became disconnected with that wisdom and began to eat for many different reasons besides simply nourishing out bodies need for fuel.

The disconnection comes in two forms: when we start eating and when we stop eating. Let’s first talk about when we stop eating. How many of you have heard this one before “finish your plate there are starving children in (insert said country)” or “finish your dinner if you want dessert”? What is this really teaching us? It is instilling in us to stuff ourselves pass the point of satisfaction; that in order to gain a “treat” we need to eat to an uncomfortable state and then add on top of that the “treat” we had been eating towards. Remember, naturally thin people are not part of the clean plate club.

Now let’s talk about why we start to eat besides true hunger. Ask yourself, what are some of the most common reasons you eat? Do you eat when you are bored, stress, happy, sad, glad, mad, frustrated….as it turns out we eat for many reasons. When cravings trigger us to eat, food will never satisfy us and more times than not emotional or environmental triggers lead to overeating because when our bodies are not telling us we need food (with true hunger) how do we know when to stop? Usually when the bag or box is empty, when we are uncomfortably full, when the movie or TV show is over, or when someone interrupts us. When we feed our bodies food when it is not asking us to feed it it (our bodies) has nothing to do with the food except store it as fat.

Through the years we also tend to lose what it feels like to feel hungry and what satisfied is. Take the time to re-identify what it feels like to be both hungry and satisfied. What does true hunger feel like to you? You may feel a hollowness in your gut, have hunger pangs, you may get a slight headache, you may not be able to concentrate; all of these feelings are true physical feeling NOT thoughts. You don’t need to eat because it is lunch or dinner time you only need to eat when your body tells you it needs nourishment through physical feelings.

Every time you feel the urge to eat ask yourself “Am I Hungry?” if the answer if yes then eat until you are satisfied; no longer hunger but not stuffed. If the answer is no search inside to find where the urge is coming from; are you bored, stressed, did you just see a commercial for the new Big Mac Wrap, are you feeling tired? Then YOU have a CHOICE you can choose to eat anyway with the knowledge that you are eating for reasons other than hunger, you can redirect your attention (works great if you are bored or procrastinating), or choose to meet your true needs. Meeting your true needs is a process in which you identify your trigger(s), accept it without judgment, strategize ways to eliminate the trigger, and take action (no matter how small the step it will be in the right direction).

So many of us say that we can’t lose weight because we LOVE food but in reality we don’t show food that we love it at all. We often eat distracted by the TV or computer, we eat fast or on auto-pilot. Many times we finish eating feeling like we just began. If you LOVE food show it by eating mindfully. Sit down at the table, turn of all distractions, savor each bite, and notice the taste, temperature, and texture of the food. Put your fork down between each bite; doing this will allow you to focus your attention on the bite in your mouth, not the bite you are filling your fork with.

Put a sign on your refrigerator and pantry that reads “IF YOU ARE NOT HUNGRY WHAT YOU NEED ISN’T IN HERE”.

Overall Tips

Develop a wellness vision for yourself. Paint a picture of what you see yourself doing at your best self? What are the most important parts of that picture?

What is your motivation? Without being modest what are the reasons you want to achieve this goal? What makes now the time? How is this time different than before?

What are your values and how do they a line with your goals? What are your strengths and how can you use then to achieve your goals?

What are your barriers? Create strategies to overcome these barriers before you are face to face with them.

What is your support system? How can you get your support system involved from the beginning?

What is your accountability? Is it a friend, family member, a coach, a blog or a journal?

Accountability is key in the beginning for setting yourself up for success.

What is your reward? Set up small rewards for yourself along the way.

Set SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, action based (not outcome), realistic, and in a time frame. An example of a smart goal would be “This week I will walk 1 mile before dinner on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.” This goal is specific because it is to the point exactly what you will do, it is measurable because it is one mile on those three days, it is an action (walking), it is realistic, and in a time frame (this week).

Menu plan! Once a week (most people picked Sundays so they can use store flyers and coupons) sit down and plan out ALL your meals for the week, breakfast, lunch, dinners, and snacks. I suggest writing a family menu, list all the meals your make on a regular basis. To create your menu for the week you can use your family menu and cookbooks for inspiration. As an example, you can have three meals from the family menu, two new meals from a cookbook, one dinner out, and one leftover night. Do not shop when you are hungry! Shopping with a list and when you are not hungry will decrease your impulse purchases and save your money!

Watch for calories not just fat. There is a common disbelief that if I eat low fat products you will lose weight. We refer to this as snackwells syndrome. Many many many low fat products are just as high in calories as the regular product. When it comes to weight loss what it all boils down to is calories in (food) vs calories out (what our bodies burn naturally and with exercise). In order to lose one pound of fat you need to create a 3500 calorie deficit. So when selecting food at the grocery store compare based on calories.

Increase the activity in your daily life. If you have a pile of stuff to take upstairs don’t jungle it all in order to make one trip, take up one at a time; simple things like this will burn extra calories and your won’t even feel like you are exercising. If you like watching TV and hate exercising dedicate the commercial breaks to walking/running the steps in your house, running in place, going jumping jacks, or sit ups. Find activities that you enjoy. Experiment with different classes such as dance aerobics, yoga, or pilates or different workout DVD’s such as Walk Away the Pounds. If you find something you enjoy you are much more likely to stick with it.

As I come to the conclusion of this post I am still filled with so much information I want to share. Instead of cramming everything into this one post I am going to break it up into weekly installments. There are SO many nutrition myths going around and I would love to be able to clear the air on many of them.

I Heart Faces

The theme this week is “Best Face Photo" and the photo had to be taken during the months of December ‘09 or January ‘10. This is a picture of my happy little boy taken a two weeks ago. His smile just melts me!

SO PROUD!

I wrote a post the other day and talked about how uneasy i was feeling because Liam hates tummy time and was not holding his head up well or pushing up; during tummy time he would just cry and try to bury his face in the floor. Well this morning he made me a very proud Mama!! Look at what he did.

Yesterday we got all of our Christmas decorations packed away. I had said earlier this week that i was sad to see them be taken down but i feel a sense of peace having our house back to our new normal and by that i mean back to our house looking like a daycare because Liam has so many things in the living room.

I was so happy this morning when i called our insurance company to get Liam's bill straightened out. Turns out that when the November bill was processed the were still in the works of changing his effective date. When i called everything had already been taken care of and a new invoice had already been sent. So far today has been awesome!

Which is harder...rocket science or....

Who would have thought that adding a newborn onto your health insurance would be harder than brain surgery and rocket science mixed together. Seriously, we have had nothing but problems with our health insurance since Liam was born. It is so frustrating because 1. Every time I think we finally have everything fixed something else goes wrong 2. I am stuck in the middle between what my HR department is telling me and what the insurance company is saying 3. I have done absolutely everything correct and timely to make this transition and 4. I feel like the pediatricians billing department thinks we are one of those people trying to make excuses for why our insurance isn’t covering stuff.

So let’s start at the beginning. After Liam was born we had 30 days to submit the paperwork to have him added onto my insurance. No problem, we had it down within two weeks. Then we get the first phone call from the ped’s office telling me that they are not seeing Liam on my insurance yet. I assure them that I faxed the paper work over and it should be processing soon. Two weeks later we get a bill, a very large bill from the hospital for Liam showing no payment made from the insurance. So I place call number one to the insurance company. They explain to me that when my HR department submitted Liam’s paperwork that they future dated him to start coverage on Jan 1. They said it could have been a mistake made because I submitted it during open enrollment and someone may have just got confused. They tell me to call my HR, have then resend the paper work with a start date of his date of birth and then they, the insurance company, would reprocess his bills and send them to me. Sounds easy enough right? No. I call the HR department and they tell me they sent the paper work over with Liam’s birth date being his start coverage date, that it was not future dated. Well great, I have one company telling me one thing and the other telling me another, so here I am stuck in the middle with my hands up. In the mean time I have the ped’s office calling me asking what is going on because we have an appointment coming up soon and need to have it figured out by then. Finally my HR department agrees to call the insurance company to get it figured out.

Then today we get a bill from the ped’s office for $210 starting that since our last appointment our insurance was terminated. What the heck? I surely do not remember terminating our coverage. Again I think the problem lies within my HR department. I am on FMLA which means I get no paycheck and have to pay my health insurance by check since there isn’t a pay check to take it out of. After Liam was born I immediately called my HR, told them I was on FMLA and wanted to continue coverage. The women told me she would send me a “coupon” and I would send in the said amount and this would continue until I came back. A few weeks later we got the “coupon” or invoice and we promptly sent out our payment. Since then we have not received another invoice like the women said we would. I believe this is why our coverage was terminated; because we never got the bill sent to us for how much we owed to continue coverage. I understand that in some way this could be my fault for not being proactive enough and calling a week ago when I first got this hunch but I am taking care of a newborn and was told that everything I needed to do had been done. It is just so frustrating. On one hand I am so happy that we switched to Alex’s insurance as of January 1 because now if we have any more problems he can make the calls to get it straightened out but also because when we were on his insurance before I got my job we never had a problem; they are so much easier to work with.

Part of me wants to just pay what we owe and be done with it instead of stepping into the mess I know this is going to be. If it was just Liam’s two month ped visit I would probably just pay it and not deal with trying to fix it but I also had my urgent care trip on the 31st which I know will come back to bite me so I guess my best bet it to try and get it straightened out.

As I said before my biggest gripe with all of this is that I feel like everyone thinks we are the type of people that don’t pay our bills because we have had so many problems. We really could not be any different. If we get a bill we will have the money in the mail the next day. It just frustrates me to know that I did everything I could have done yet we still had and are still having so many issues.

Oh well, here’s hoping come Monday I can get it all figured out! The only good thing that came out of this was that in frustration i cleaned our whole kitchen.

So today I had no luck at Target searching for any ornaments on sale. Last weekend they had so much left and this weekend everything was cleared out. I saw on the news how Target was transforming their holiday section into a Sam’s Club/Cosco like department. It was kind of interesting. They had a lot of bulk items for a fairly good price. I wonder what their goal is in the long run for this addition.

I bought the best sweater at Target today. I am in love with it. Being a SAHM, as awful as it is to admit, I rarely put on regular clothes during the day if we are not going anywhere. I wanted to spruce up my look with outfits that are still comfy but nicer than PJ’s. I love the look of long sweaters and legging, my husband will not let me out of the house it them but that is another story. On the clearance rack today they had these long, big, squishy sweaters. I picked one up along with a new pain of black leggings. As soon as I got home I changed into my outfit and have decided that I am going back tomorrow to buy it in another color as well!

As for a nook update I settled for reading the first book in the Dexter series. So far it is really good; similar but different from the show in a good way.

Alex, who is not a reader at all, started reading The Lovely Bones and said it is really good. I have heard so many good things about the book and it has amazing reviews on amazon but I am reluctant to read it. Why you ask. Because I am a huge wimp! The trailer for the movie scares me and I get nightmares over the littlest things and proceed to then stay up for hours because I am too afraid to fall back asleep. Yes, I am like a 5 year old. Alex and I loved Criminal Minds but had to stop watching it for that reason. If we watch a scary movie or anything that provokes anxiety I have to watch something light before going to bed, no matter how late it is.

Of course no post be complete without a picture of my little man. We went for a car ride with Daddy to get Wii motion plus attachments for our Wii controllers.

The Nook is here

Yeah!! I ordered my nook right after Thanksgiving. It had an expected ship date of 1/11 BUT it came today. Once Alex got home he was able to help me get it all set up and ready to go. Now i just need to decide what book to read first.

Alex and I got hooked on Dexter over Christmas. We ended up watching all 4 seasons in under a week. We had no lives that week. I am itching for more Dexter so i think the ebooks are first in line for reading on the nook. Other than that I also have Sophie Kinsella's Twenties Girl, and two Michael Pollan books i am dying to read. One series that i slowly but surly find myself become more and more intrigued by is the Twilight series. I don't want to be a band wagoner but it seems everyone I know that read the books could not put them down. I want to see what all the hype is about!

We had a momentous event yesterday in our house. Liam picked up Gup Gup, his beloved WubbaNub, and put him back in his mouth all by himself. Can a get a hallelujah!

And since I am working, so hard, towards my goal of weight loss. We picked up KFC for dinner tonight. Seriously Sarah, seriously, UGH! Anyway i got an adorable picture of Liam out of our trip. I love this hat on him from Kushies, so cute!

I am bummed about my plans for tomorrow. We are taking down all of our Christmas decorations. I hate taking down Christmas decorations because the house goes from feeling warm and cozy with the soft lighting and abundance of decorations to cold and sparse. I loved our Christmas tree this year; I can't wait to see our electric bill for the month of December because i had that tree on from the moment Liam and I woke up in the morning until we went to bed. I need to make a quick run to Target tomorrow to see if they have any tubs of ornaments left. I purchased a beautiful 6 foot Christmas tree last weekend for $17!! It was 75% off. Next year i want to do a tree with only white lights and gold and purple ornaments with ribbon. Last weekend Target had a ton of ornament tubs left in those colors so i am hoping i can snag one or two.

Let it SNOW!

We are expected to get upwards of 6 inches of snow today by 5 o'clock. This will be our first real snow storm this year in Indianapolis. I am excited because i am able to stay home in comfy clothes, snuggle with Liam, have the fireplace on and a nice cup of hot chocolate BUT i just want Alex to get home safely. It is only 10 am right now and as i look out onto our deck we have about 5 inches....i am starting to think their estimate of 6 inches is a little off.

Yesterday i put together Liam's exersaucer. This boy hates tummy time so in an effort to get him out of his bouncy chair, which i now call his old man recliner, i decided to pull out the new toy. He loves the exersaucer and surprisingly holds himself up very well. Liam hating tummy time stresses me out. I try every day, a few times of day but it only lasts a few minutes. I loved Dr. Karp's Happiest Baby on the Block, his philosophies seriously did give me the happiest baby on the block, and he believes that for children under 4 months old you should not let them cry anything out because it gives them feelings of insecurity. So of course when Liam starts to fuss i save him but the poor kiddo is not making much progress on his push up strength.

The boy also loves TV. Ugh...can he get anymore like his father, just kidding, i wouldn't mind at all if he turned out to be just like him! There is so much debate as to whether watching TV under a certain age is detrimental or not. It is not recommended by the AAP for children under 2 BUT there has been recent research at Harvard to show that there is no benefit but there is also no harm. For Christmas he got a Baby Mozart DVD from his Aunt Kerri. Both yesterday morning and today i have put it on for him while i make breakfast and check email. He just stares at the TV and coos/talks to it the whole time. I think this might be one of those things that i say "hey my brother watched a TON of TV when he was Liams age and look how he turned out (very good, grad student soon to be doctoral candidate). The picture below is him smiling at Taylor Swift; i guess he think she is pretty.

I just got the biggest bottom lip pout and wail from Liam. Why you ask? I was having lunch and we was so interested in my food so i started telling him that in a few weeks he will be able to try cereal and then vegetables ...... insert lip pout and crocodile tears. HAHA even more like Daddy, crying over the thought of veggies. But he loves frog legs!
